Out of all the unimportant things, football is the most important.
Not to be deterred by the day’s rain, two teams vying for the pride of Perrott Hill converged on Wednesday afternoon. The crowd, about thirty strong, were anxious for the kick off. The day’s magnificent official, Mr. Daniel, conducted the pregame rituals and conversations.
The student team dictated the pace of the opening minutes, and they caught the slow footed teachers with two well taken goals. The teachers rallied and were relieved to reply with two goals of their own. Nevertheless, the vigour of youth was ever present, the teacher’s defensive lines were never given respite, and the students were making their speed advantage count. Jakub Kuthan was a menace on the left wing, and his strong right boot was difficult to contain. The teachers were lucky to be on equal terms at half time, after Mr. Zhanadil and Mr. Semi found their range and put some beautiful long range goals into the back of the net.

The second half began much like the first, only this time with greater intensity. More often, teachers were to be found on the floor, as they absorbed some heavy challenges. Mr. Daniel was forced to reach for his pocket to show a calming yellow card to the pumped-up students. The students continued to lead the scoring, with the teachers always just about able to respond and keep themselves in the game. Mr. Jakub, as one of the youngest and most handsome players on the teachers’ team, dazzled the crowd with eye-catching moves down the right wing; twice twisting the defenders inside and out. The cheers were only louder when the youngest player and goalkeeper on the teachers’ team, a Tony Hajek, made multiple brave saves and put his body on the line.
In the closing minutes of the second half, the score was tied at 8 – 8. The pressure was building and no team could be sure of clinching the winning goal. After suffering a questionable challenge earlier in the game, a rested Mr. Zhanadil returned to the field and resumed his role in dominating the central zone of the pitch. With a lack of care for the feelings of our high school students, he drilled two late goals in quick succession. The students’ team was now in panicked disarray, and the experienced teachers knew that it was only a matter of playing the clock to the final whistle. Frustrated students threw themselves at every ball and found a late burst of energy, but to no avail. The teachers changed formation to bolster the defensive line and saw off every entry into the box.

The final score was 10 – 8 to the teachers. In the end, calm experience prevailed over strength and speed. Both teams gave a great account of themselves. When the students have recovered emotionally, and the teachers physically, we are looking forward to a rematch in the future.
Thank you to all that came out to play, and to the strong crowd that enhanced the atmosphere. Thanks to the generous donations from players and spectators, we raised a significant amount in support. As the winners, the teachers have decided to donate to a local cause: https://inbaze.cz/en/
